Objective

I lead teams to design & build software that solves real problems for real humans.

I love the labor of design, and I stay hands-on with design & research until a team scales.

I have a lot of experience working on large problems, like enterprise systems management and reliability. I love to work with organizations that directly help people.

Best Skills

  • Product design leadership — giving organizations focus on their users’ most important needs, weaving disparate solutions into a cohesive product.
  • Creation and management of a user-centered design process that works within and adapts to the organization.
  • Care and feeding of UX design and research teams, from recruiting and hiring to task and career management.

Professional Experience

Verica – VP of User Experience

Jan 2019 – Present

Verica is the leader in Continuous Verification for large, complex systems. Based on Chaos Engineering technology developed at Netflix, Continuous Verification uses experimentation to discover security and availability weaknesses before they become business-disrupting incidents.

We’ve talked with hundreds of technology leaders, managers, and practitioners at most of the Fortune 100. We know these people: what causes them pain, what costs their teams time, what costs their companies money. I bring that knowledge into the company, help engineers develop understanding and empathy for our customers, and lead all user-facing efforts.

Verica is in use by some of the largest telecom and media companies in the world. We regularly deliver insights that can be found no other way.

Veelo – VP of Product

Mar 2017 – Dec 2018

Veelo was a small, customer-focused sales-enablement platform, and a leader in bringing sales-enablement solutions to mobile devices. Veelo enabled sales leaders to create and manage training programs for their teams, including practicing their skills with asynchronous video coaching. Veelo enabled practitioners to find current sales information and assets, and quickly share those with prospects to expand and inform the buyer’s family.

Veelo was acquired by Big Tin Can. The product is still in use.

Capsci Health – Co-Founder & VP of User Experience

Nov 2014 – Feb 2017

Capsci Health was founded to digitize and mobilize personal access to health care and health insurance information. The Affordable Care Act allowed the creation of community-centered, non-profit health insurers, and these were Capsci’s first customers. There’s a good retrospective on the ACA Co-Op program.

  • Interviewed and studied customers from multiple insurers to understand user needs in this new space.
  • Designed and launched a mobile application, (iOS & Android) custom-branded for small, local health insurers.
  • We also integrated with physician-as-a-service platforms to afford patient/physician interactions via our mobile app.

Snapflow – VP of User Experience (consultancy)

Jun 2014 – Oct 2014

In this short-term consultancy I connected the company more deeply with its customers and helped them shift to a more agile design process.

  • I moved the design practice from purely visual design to the beginnings of user experience design.
  • We interviewed customers, modeled their problems and contexts, and iterated rapidly through potential design solutions.
  • Introduced and adopted many UX tools, e.g., persona research, user stories, story maps, rapid low-fidelity iteration.

Puppet – VP of User Experience

Feb 2011 – May 2014

I was Puppet’s first designer as employee #32. I built and scaled the UX team as the company grew to 300.

  • Created and lead a team of 15 UX professionals across four disciplines: UX design, user research, visual design, and rapid prototyping.
  • Integrated human-centered design into the company culture and software development process.
  • Shipped several major and minor versions of Puppet Enterprise, helping grow our enterprise customer base from zero to hundreds.
  • Managed creation of the Puppet Test Pilots, a 700-strong pool of UX testing volunteers recruited from Puppet’s customers and community.

AboutUs – Director of User Experience

Feb 2010 – Feb 2011

AboutUs maintained a wiki with a page for each of the top 20 million domain names.

  • Integrated UX design into the existing agile development process.
  • Expanded the design and product planning window from one week to one quarter with no reduction in velocity, resulting in more consistent products.
  • Created and ran persona and user studies to help set product direction.
  • Many technical improvements, including large reductions in page size, load time, and efficiency of front-end code.
  • Decreased my Ward Number to the lowest possible: 1.

OpenSourcery – Director of User Experience

Jul 2005 – Feb 2010

OpenSourcery was a boutique software consultancy, working primarily with mission-driven organizations and non-profits.

  • Created and standardized the user experience process, starting with client interviews and ending with final deployment.
  • User interface design and development for all non-trivial projects.
  • Creation, maintenance, and socialization of the software design and development process.
  • Long-term management of designers and developers.

Naked Ape Consulting – Co-Founder & UX Designer

Nov 2002 – Jun 2005

Naked Ape was a small Portland tech consultancy. We built a lot of small software and infrastructure projects for small companies.

  • Designed, built, and deployed an EMR (electronic medical records) system for a multisite non-profit mental health clinic.
  • Designed, built, and deployed a search kiosk for Movie Madness (the greatest video store in the world).
  • Joint responsibility for all aspects of customer relations.

StageDirect – Co-Founder & Web Designer

Apr 2001 – Oct 2002

My first startup! StageDirect produced fringe theater, filmed it, and sold VHS and DVD of our productions. The website is long gone, and no one sells our old stock anymore. There’s an old Playbill article about StageDirect.

I designed and built the website, e-commerce, and content management systems.

Education
